1832 January 27. Charles Dodgson is born at Daresbury Parsonage, Cheshire, England.
1843 The Dodgson family moves to Croft Rectory, Yorks.
1844 Charles’s first school, Richmond, Yorkshire.
1845 Produces ‘Useful and Instructive Poetry’, first of the family magazines.
1846 Enters Rugby school, University of Oxford.
1851 Comes into residence at Christ Church, Oxford. Christ Church is a constituent college of the University of Oxford.
1852 Obtains a ‘first’ in Maths Moderations; nominated to a studentship.
1854 Has first works published in “The Oxonian Advertiser’, and the ‘Whitby Gazette’.

 


Becomes a B.A.
1855 Is made ‘Master of the House’.

 


Arrival of the new Dean, Henry Liddell.

 


Contributes to ‘Comic Times’ – writes first verse of ‘Jabberwocky’.

 


Takes up photography.

 


Meets Alice Liddell for the first time.
1856 The pen-name Lewis Carroll first appears in ‘The Train’ (successor to ‘Comic Times’).
1857 Becomes a M.A.

 


Meets Holman Hunt, Ruskin.

 


Visits and Photographs Tennyson.

 


Writes ‘Hiawatha’s Photographing’.
1858 Exhibits at the Photographic Society’s 5th Exhibition.
1859 Visits and photographs Tennyson at Farringford, Islenof Wight.
1860 First book published – ‘A Syllabus of Plane Algebraic Geometry’.
1861 Contributes to ‘College Rhymes’.

 


Ordained Deacon.
1862 On the 4th of July Charles tells the story of ‘Alice’ during a boat trip to Godstow with the 3 Liddell sisters. Alice ask Charles to write the story down to her.

 


On November 13 Charles begins to write down ‘Alice’s Adventures Underground’ for Alice Liddell.
1863 Manuscript for ‘Alice’s Adventures Underground’ is finished.
1864 November 28. Charles give Alice Liddell a handwritten manuscript of ‘Alice’s Adventures Underground’, with illustrations by Charles himself.

 


Expands original manuscript and retitles it ‘Alices Adventures In Wonderland’.
1865 On May 4 the first specimen volume of ‘Alices Adventures In Wonderland’ is sent to Charles from MacMillan (publishers) in time for Alice’s birthday (on May 4).

 


November 26. ‘Alices Adventures In Wonderland’ is published.
1868 June. Begins work on ‘Through The Looking-glass’.
1871 January. ‘Through The Looking-glass’ is completed.

 


December. ‘Through The Looking-glass’ is published.
1898 January 14. Charles Dodgson die in Guildford, Surrey, England. Age 65.
